B’s Birthday Dinner
Like most people, myself included, my soon to be hubby is pretty picky with his bbq sauces. We have gone all over this city trying to find him some ribs that are delicious and deserve a second, third and even fourth visit and have been pretty down in our luck. The longer I’ve been in a relationship with this man, the more he influences me. Chili’s, Applebees, TGI Fridays… these were all good eateries to me before, before I fell into his influences. “They’re too commercial,” “Everything tastes the same,” I too soon began to think this way. But Longhorn Steakhouse… they seemed to prove us wrong time and time again. Great ribs, great service… so we set out to have some delicious ribs for his birthday.
I’m not sure if every layout of Longhorn’s is the same but when you walk into ours through the double set of double doors, you’re greeted by the little hostess stand to the left and the sitting area for those who have to wait to be seated to the right. Several feet from the doors is a giant stone wall with lil cubbies that hold pictures and awards and of course toothpicks and mints, after all, what steakhouse wouldn’t have toothpicks?! Behind the hostess stand is the full restaurant and behind the waiting area is the bar area with a couple of booths and some tables. Having our 1 year old daughter with us has never been a problem before and we’re sat just like the rest of the world, with the rest of the world in the full restaurant. Where were we sat? We were sat right behind this giant stone wall in the bar area. It was so dark that I could barely see the menu let alone my amazing birthday boy across the booth from me! This would have been an acceptable place to sit had the entire rest of the restaurant side been full and same with the bar area, but they weren’t. There were open tables and booths on both sides. The meal better be worth it!
We ordered our usual to start, the Western Cheese Fries, with no jalapeños please! The cheese looked old and cold. The fries looked and tasted undercooked and cold and I swear there was none of the “loaded” chili on this dish! Not exactly the greatest way to start the meal but the best was still coming!
I ordered the 9 oz. Flo’s filet medium rare and Brandon order a full rack of ribs, because again, they are his favorite! My steak looked great! B’s full rack, not so great. It came in 3 different sections! That’s odd. I cut into my steak only to realize that even in this super dark lighting, it’s rare. So rare that it’s cold. And no, I am not exaggerating! B’s ribs… cold. I guess those 3 lil piggies lived in Wisconsin! but we were hungry and so I ate about 5 bites of my steak and B ate 1 of the 3 sections of his ribs.
This was not the dinner that we set out fo, especially for his birthday!
When the manager walked over to our table, I sighed with relief. We could possibly get a discount for our food, or maybe even new food brought to us. My sigh of relief turned into frustration. He was more interested in getting gck-1 (my daughter’s nickname) to wave at him than he was with our food. What food? Oh that’s right, he didn’t ask us how our food was because he disappeared before we could even say “can I have a new steak and new ribs please?!”
And of course there has to be a prefect ending to our perfect meal right?! Maybe the lights would be turned up and I could finally see my disappointed birthday boy. Or maybe or waiter noticed our food wasn’t eaten and we would be asked “how was it?” Sadly these events did not occur. But this did… my gorgeous lil one year old daughter had explosive diarrhea which now covered her entire chest and back and B’s arm from him lifting her out of her high chair.
A sour taste in our mouths towards Longhorn was accompanied by the sour smell coming from our daughter in the back seat the entire way home. At least there were some presents waiting at home to be opened!
