Lesson Learned About Fevers

No one likes to get a fever. That’s obvious. But how exactly do you make it go away? B makes it go away by wearing sweatpants, a long sleeved shirt, a hooded sweatshirt, and then wraps himself in several comforters to “sweat” it out and break the fever. Eww no. I do not do sweat. I’ve tried this method once and just the feeling of a little sweat made me freak out and put on all new clothes and sit without any blankets. I just don’t do sweat. I take ibuprofen to make it go away. I’m one of those people who doesn’t shy away from tylenol or ibuprofen. If it’s gonna help, I’m gonna take it.

But what do you do when your just turned 2 year old has a fever?

When gck-1′s temp reached 105.7 F I thought I was going to throw up. It was only then that I knew that layering her was not what I should have done. I immediately stripped off the sweatpants and sweatshirt and blankets, put some ice in her juice and made her take some sips, grabbed a cold applesauce container from the fridge and made her eat half of it and then laid her on my lap while I put a cold washcloth on her head… all while the little angel was saying, “I Lub You Mommy.” I thought my child was going to have a seizure or die. I had no idea what I had done was making her worse.

Lesson Learned: do not layer them in sweatpants, a t shirt, a hooded sweatshirt and blankets.

Her temperature slowly declined as the night went on thanks to children’s ibuprofen, sprite, and a diaper clad child. You can be certain that there will be no layering from here on out. Unless it’s winter and there’s snow on the ground.

A very big thank you to Monster’s Inc, Dora, Veggie Tales, The Care Bears and any other cartoon that was viewed on the ipad or the big screen. You made my little one very happy and comfortable in her horrible state.

aww… you poor thing! i remember when my first child had his first high fever (105). i felt exactly the same way! another good thing to do is give them a lukewarm/cool bath… that usually helps bring the temp down. i am so sorry for your sweetheart. i’ll be praying…
