Cake Bite Lollipops Fail

My CFO’s birthday is today and I really wanted to make her something special instead of going to Publix and buying their normal blah cake. I really wanted to show off my baking skills (what?! some people still think I have them ;) ) and impress everyone by making some of these:

(bakerella)

I bought chocolate cake mix and funfetti cake mix. I bought cream cheese icing, 2 bags of melting candies, almond bark (in case the melting candies were disgusting, which from tasting it, I think they’re actually melting candies in block form), kabob sticks (because I couldn’t find lollipop sticks anywhere), and powdered sugar (in case the melting chocolate and almond bark were a fail).

Good news is…

We’ll be eating chocolate cake today.

Bad news is…

We will not be eating funfetti cake lollipops.

I have no idea what went wrong. They fell down the kabobs.

They tasted like a big gob of frosting.

They looked mushed and mashed and not very “cake-like”.

I tried to cover them in frosting and just place them in cupcake liners but that was a serious no-no as well. The frosting was so thick and gooey that it was just not even edible anymore.

Talk about a serious fail. And to add to the drama, I ran out of cranberry juice so I had to drink my vodka with cherry koolaid. Agh.

There’s a reason I am not a baker!

Ever tried making these things? Ever succeeded?! What’s your trick?

I’m so sorry that your cake pops didn’t turn out. I’m even more sorry that you were out of cranberry juice!! I was out of tequila the other day and had to drink my orange juice with rum….
I made these a long time ago for a picnic. They turned out good. I didn’t put them on a stick. I didn’t use the candy melts. The trick to using the bark is to add some shortening to it to make it thin enough for dipping. I usually add a tablespoon at a time until it becomes the right consistency. They’re so great. I need to fix them again!

I have always wanted to try making these, since I never see them in the stores. But I guess I will wait and find a recipe to make sure they work. Sorry they didn’t turn out for you! At least you have chocolate cake to enjoy. Better get more cranberry juice cuz kool-aid isn’t too good with vodka (unless you’re desparate).

OK…I loved the “ran out of cranberry and had to drink my vodka with cherry kool-aid” That made me LOL.

I love looking at your pictures of PCB. I am originally from Dothan, AL, so PCB was the home of a lot of my high school memories, as well as growing up memories. We would ride down to PCB on Friday nights just to eat at Pizza Hut, and we had 2 in town! Since I no longer live close, I haven’t been in years, and years, and years (too long) but hope to come down in September!

I keep thinking I’ll try to make cake balls, but anything recipe that has more than 3 steps is not high on my to do list!
