Sand and Starfish

Trial and Error

We have no flood lights outside by where my garden is. Actually we do, but they don’t work. Gripe gripe gripe from me because we bought the house this way and I haven’t called an electrician yet. So you know what I did Friday night?! I worked on my garden by the light of our bathroom and candle light. No lie. I tried taking pictures but they just wouldn’t turn out well. So here’s what I came out to Saturday morning: (well kinda…)

The big pile of dirt to the left, that’s what I dug Friday night. The boards though… I was so excited that B actually got up early that we went to Lowes at 7:30 and bought everything I needed.

This is what it looked like at roughly noonish. The problem with living at the beach is that our house was once probably just dirty sand. So I had to buy a bunch of dirt and mix it in with our dirty sand. I know absolutely nothing about which dirt to buy so I may not be a help in that area… and there was no one at Lowes that could really actually help me other than showing me where stuff is located. Score -1 for Lowes! Trial and error works for me just fine ;) But “turning the soil” is some serious hard work. My body hates me.

Not a large change but here’s what it looked like around 2-ish:

Like I said, not a big change but really it was. It was more dirt and dirty sand being turned together. I bought 6 bags total of that dirt and all of it got worked in. I probably could have actually gone with a couple more but like I said, trial and error work just fine for me right now!

My helpers :)

I placed everything where I thought they should go… and ta-da!

And now the waiting game begins. I’m not just waiting on these great little crops to grow but I’m waiting to see if that same raccoon that was eating the dog food puts his paws in my garden.

Now for some garden talk. I may or may not have done all the correct research on what goes where and how far to space things out… again, trial and error. I more or less spaced things how I thought best and from previous efforts to make things grow. I do know that tomatoes and peppers like it when parsley is close to them… it keeps insects at bay because of the smell it produces. Other than that, I really have no idea what I’m doing but it’s too late to turn back now!

I would love a garden like that (and a boxer like that!)

I think you did great. This is my first garden, and I really had NO clue. I have been told that you just learn as you go. I did not know about the parsley thing…I must get some.
YOUR helpers are delish. I love em’…they are as cute (and useless) as mine are!!!!
    So glad you shared.

btw: our yard is mostly sand too, and we are 7 miles in from the beach!!! But we also have a lot of rocks…I think we may have built our house on an old quarry. :)

Well for first timers we both did pretty good!
My little helpers mainly stood on the other side of the fence and just whimpered! They’re not getting in this garden!
And the rocks… I had some too. They seemed to only be in one corner but they were HUGE! Made for some pretty sore arms the next day!
Can’t wait to see what our gardens bring us in the months to come!

I’m so jealous you are building a garden. We are still watching the snow melt up here. Cute pups!

I am definitely not jealous that you still have snow up there!

And now I think I will be getting my fake cheese curds for dinner from Zaxby’s. Thanks ;)
