With hurricane/tropical storm Alex moving through the Gulf, I was super scared that the oil was going to be washed up on the beach here in Panama City Beach. I thought for sure we’d see dead fish across the shore and seagulls unable to fly from being soaked in oil. Totally not the case.
On Saturday, we were greeted with beautiful skies and lots of sunshine. The water was clear and it was pretty warm as well. There were some slight waves because of the winds from Alex and a red flag was flying to warn beach goers to stay out of the water. The biggest threat wasn’t the oil or tar balls or smell of oil. The winds were moving east and so the oil moved with it. There was absolutely no oil smell in the air nor was there a tar ball to be spotted. Clean up crews were out in full force though. We saw several big coach busses full of workers and watched them as they walked up and down the beach… without spotting anything. We even spotted a boat that had some booms on deck. That made me a little concerned but they never stopped and threw them over to be used so I guess it’s better to be prepared than to be too late.

Sunday, the 4th, we were greeted a little differently. The morning sun had started to become scarce as rain clouds moved in. The rain fell for about 15-20 minutes and then it passed. The clouds stuck around for a little while but it was actually a really good thing… the shade that they provided made what could have been a very hot and sweaty day a much more tolerable and enjoyable one. By 4:15, the clouds had disappeared and the sun came back out to play. Along with it was one of the coolest rainbows I have ever seen. It wasn’t long from side to side but it was tall, really tall from red to purple. It was just beautiful!
Oil free beach on Saturday. Oil free beach on Sunday. I still can’t believe that the oil is continuing to “leak” our of that rig. Did you hear that BP was thinking about nuking the well?! You read that just like I did… n-u-k-i-n-g. What good could come from a nuclear explosion in the Gulf? You know how some people never seem to stop impressing you and amazing you with how smart and talented they are? BP is completely opposite. It just never seizes to amaze me how absolutely retarded they are and I cannot for the life of me figure out what magic drugs they’re on to make them think the way they do.
Were you here for the 4th too? Have any pictures you’d like to share? I’d be very happy to share them! Just email me or send me a comment and we’ll be in touch!

Looks like you guys spent a wonderful day at the beach. It’s so fabulous to hear the oil has not arrived in Panama City. Hopefully it stays away! I think it’s cool to hear workers arrived to clean up, if needed. I heard that story about BP wanting to nuke the damaged well, but it was so ridiculous I figured it was a media rumor. (Besides, it would be highly illegal with the international nuclear laws!) Love your shots of the storm over the water!
We’ve really been blessed here in Panama City Beach to not have the oil hit us like it has over in Pensacola. I just can’t believe how much sitting around we’re doing with this well! Why hasn’t it been plugged yet?! Why are we just waiting for the relief wells?! Agh. But again… I try to focus on the positive that it’s not here yet and that we can still enjoy the beach.
I’m glad to hear that is has not reached there yet! A month ago hubby and I were in Sarasota (we live in Orlando ), and we wanted to visit the beaches there together before they became trashed. I think they are still okay there too but the closest beach to us is Cocoa beach and tar balls have been showing up even though it’s on the atlantic side. Odd.
Hubby really wanted me to see Panama Beach and the Emerald coast before things get really scary. Good to hear that we can still make it over to Panama City Beach. :)
I agree with your thoughts on BP-they are truly evil! It would cost them a little bit of money to have taken precautions when they knew a problem existed. They chose to ignore it and now we have a lifetime of oil in the gulf. There is no way to really get rid of it. 21 years after Exxon spill and they are still dealing with devastation and it wasn’t nearly as big of a spill.
we are planning on comeing to panama city beach on july 31. im praying the oil stays away my children have never been nor my sister but i hope it never hits there i love the place and i thank the people on the coast deal with to much crap but i love the beaches and if anyone could keep me updated i would love it god bless our animals and our beaches
